A Story of Grace – Day 8

Romans 8 v 8

“So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:8‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

When you’re a people-pleaser, someone who cares more about people think than what God thinks about what you wear, how you look or how you behave you are governed by this need to please!

Each day you are seeking new ways to impress this person, be they your boss, your partner, your friends or that person up the road with the slightly bigger house and slightly better car!

But I have found that the more I craved that affirmation, that attention, the less valued I felt. It was nice to be told I was a good singer or actor but everyone including me could see the charade for what it was…

They were just humouring me.  Anything to shut me up!

When something big like a break up happens, people stop sitting on their hands, they stop biting their tongue and they say what they really think!

Hearing it, albeit second hand, is like reading your own obituary…  Mine was not pretty reading!

“We came to yours for lunch but we never felt like inviting you back, he never stopped talking about himself!”

And many similar stories, all of which I’m convinced are true! Now I had sensed that there was some reason why people seemed to avoid us, but I had never realised that it was because of that!

You see when you are consumed in your own sense of self-importance, nothing and no one else matters!

So for all your trying you won’t succeed! If, you’re trying in your own strength.

“So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:8‬ ‭

So what is then that the Lord requires?

“He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”

‭‭Micah‬ ‭6:8‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Do justly, love mercy and walk humbly, with your God.

Notice, WITH your God. Don’t walk ahead of him, walk in step with God. Lift up others! Encourage others! Last Christmas I faced the very real prospect of spending Christmas alone for the very first time. At first I wallowed and was miserable.
Then I decided to bless someone else! I took two shoeboxes and filled them with sweets and magazines and toys and games for Operation Christmas Child and I wept as I did it.  Truly it is more blessed to give than it is to receive.

I am pleased to say, I was fortunate enough to be invited over for Christmas and I considered it a privilege to spend such a special day with my wife and children.

God is good!

In what areas are you living in the flesh? What do you need to submit to God today? You say, it can wait till tomorrow, well yes, it can! But can you really put off pleasing God till tomorrow? I know I couldn’t…
